That’s why the Backpack for Kids Campaign is stepping in once again this year to make a difference. Since its launch in 2022, the Backpack for Kids Campaign has been making a mean-ingful impact on families throughout the Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc. Created to support community members facing financial hardship, the Campaign provides children and teens with backpacks filled with essential school supplies – ensuring every child has the tools they need to succeed academically and socially. The program is a partnership between the Strathroy-Caradoc Police Service, Strathroy Salvation Army, the Strathroy Fire Association and most recently First
3Summer 2025 Strathroy Area keepin’ it local®www.strathroyarea.ca www.keepinitlocal.com Nations Police. By working together these organizations hope to reach as many families as possible. With rising costs putting added pressure on many house-holds, the Backpack for Kids Campaign has become a vital lifeline for parents preparing their children for the school year. Each backpack is thoughtfully filled with age-appropriate supplies like notebooks, pencils, pens, crayons, lunch containers, water bottles and so much more. Each backpack is packed with everything a student needs to start the school year with confidence. The Campaign relies heavily on donations from local businesses, clubs and members from our community. Studies have shown that students who begin the school year with the proper supplies are more likely to stay engaged and perform better in school. Providing a backpack filled with supplies helps to level the playing field and show children that their education matters. If you wish to contribute to this year’s Backpack for Kids Campaign, community members are encouraged to donate school supplies at one of our pop up locations. Find the volunteers who eagerly await your donations at the following locations in Strathroy: August 7 at Walmart, August 13 at Giant Tiger and August 20 at the Real Canadian Superstore, each from 4pm to 6pm. If you are unable to make one of these dates or locations you are welcome to drop off donations to Strathroy Salvation Army located at 71 Maitland Terrace, Strathroy. Together, the people of Strathroy-Caradoc are proving that a strong community can make a powerful differ-ence – one backpack at a time. With rising costs putting added pressure on many households, the Backpack for Kids Campaign has become a vital lifeline for parents preparing their children for the school year.

Old-Fashioned Country Funwritten by Alana Listerphoto provided by Melbourne Tractor Fest6Strathroy Area keepin’ it local® Summer 2025For those daydreaming of a rural escape where hometown charm meets the thrill of adventure, the Melbourne Tractor Fest offers the perfect destination. It's a chance to enjoy a day out with family, friends and neighbours in the early summer sunshine – soaking in small-town spirit and country pride at its best. The 3rd Annual Melbourne Tractor Fest will be held on Saturday June 21, from 9am to 6pm, at 6395 Parkhouse Drive, Melbourne. This year’s date presents a special twist, as the Tractor Fest was formerly held in conjunction with the Melbourne Agricultural Society and 4-H 3rd Annual Melbourne Tractor Fest Features New Action-packed Attractions this June www.keepinitlocal.com www.strathroyarea.ca
Club’s Fair in August; however, this year it will have the chance to be its own event. With Tractor Fest now held on a separate date and location, there is no longer the risk of scaring the animals that attend the activities of the fair with loud noises, and so this June, the organizers are eager to unveil some brand-new, show-stopping events to entertain its guests. The Tractor Fest is excited to add new thrilling events and features every year. In 2023, the first year of the Tractor Fest, the event included a Tractor Show with parades and a Farm Toy Show, both of which were so successful that a staggering $1800 was raised for ground improvements. The following summer, in 2024, a Market and a Touch A Tractor/Truck event were both added, and both of these new additions were also met with resounding success. This year promises to be the most epic of them all, as the 2025 Melbourne Tractor Fest will include all of these features, plus two new action-packed attractions: The Western Ontario Outlaws Lawnmower Racing Club from Petrolia and the Big Creek Tractor Pulling Association from Aylmer. What’s more, the organizers of the Tractor Fest have also revealed that each year, their tractor members have brought along all-new feature items which are unveiled on the day of the show, guaranteeing no shortage of thrills and surprises this June. The new arrivals this year are sure to become beloved hits with the whole family. Perhaps the most innovative newcomer, The Western Ontario Outlaws Lawnmower Racing Club is a non-profit group donating annually to charity, and its male and female racers currently range all the way from five to 77 years old. Popular in the United States and quickly gaining traction in Canada, the sport of lawnmower racing is proud to be family-friendly and alcohol-free, guaranteeing bucketloads of laughter and wholesome fun for the whole family. Often playfully referred to as the “poor man’s NASCAR,” racers receive no prize money for competing, but one might say they receive a much greater reward: the thrill of racing on a lawnmower up to 100 km/h, with an engine boasting anywhere between eight to 90 horsepower and vehicles costing between $500 to $5000 for various racing classes. The Outlaws normally compete in Petrolia at their home track, but they also travel to provide an adrenaline-filled spectacle for many different events, and this year, the Melbourne Tractor This year promises to be the most epic of them all, as the 2025 Melbourne Tractor Fest will include all of these features, plus two new action-packed attractions: The Western Ontario Outlaws Lawnmower Racing Club from Petrolia and the Big Creek Tractor Pulling Association from Aylmer.continued on the next page7Summer 2025 Strathroy Area keepin’ it local®www.strathroyarea.ca www.keepinitlocal.com

The other new attraction this year, Aylmer’s Big Creek Tractor Pulling Association (BCTPA), is also sure to capti-vate audiences with the power of their immense machines. The BCTPA currently consists of about 15 members, both men and women, and is proud to have more than 25 years of history in 4-cylinder tractor pulling. They are dedicated to showcasing the craftsmanship and brute strength of their mighty tractors, often holding races at their home track in Aylmer and holding events for fair boards, in addition to traveling to various events such as the Tractor Fest, where they leave audiences stunned by up-close encounters with these massive machines. This June, the BCTPA is sure to impress all visitors with their expertise and strength. For avid lovers of the Tractor Fest’s two previous years, there’s no need to worry – in addition to Sarnia’s Outlaws and Aylmer’s BCTPA, the Melbourne Tractor Fest will also feature many familiar crowd-pleasing guests from its previous years. Here’s how it will all go down: impressive, fan-favourite Tractor Parades will take place at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm around the grounds, offering three separate opportu-nities for guests to enjoy these spectacles. There are more than 40 members in the Tractor Fest, and most will be bringing multiple tractors to show off in the parades, ranging from new to old and anything in between. The three exciting parades featured this year will be vintage class, open cab and larger tractors. This year’s theme is ‘Trusty Rusty,’ and is open to all tractors. Additionally, the brand-new Lawnmower Racing will be held in a three-hour show from 9am to noon, while the BCTPA’s 4-cylinder tractor pulling feats will be in their own three-hour show from 3pm to 6pm. For those seeking a bit of rest from the sunshine, the Market will be held under shade from 9am to 3pm and will feature a whopping 30+ talented vendors, while the Toy Show, bursting with up to 40 tables of toy equipment vendors and exhibitors, will take place inside the riding ring from 9am to 3pm. Most of the Toy Show’s items will be for sale, while a handful of tables will be saved for displays not for sale. Free Universal Carriage rides around the grounds will be available from 9am to noon, and the popular Touch A Tractor/Truck event will also make a proud return on the day. In addition, there will be 8Strathroy Area keepin’ it local® Summer 2025photo taken by Rylee Kerr Photography www.keepinitlocal.com www.strathroyarea.ca
around five dealer displays for tractors, with one or two specialty items featured. A corn hole tournament will also take place from 10am to 2pm; individuals must be 14+ to enter, and teams of two are required. Teams are encouraged to enter early, as this will guarantee them a spot, but registration will also be available on the day if space remains. The cost per team is $40, and all proceeds raised from the tournament will be given to funding local sports. When tummies start to rumble, the Melbourne Tractor Fest will be full of delicious options available to satisfy every craving. Mr. Amish from Strathroy will whip up tantalizing treats, and several food trucks will offer tempting options: these trucks will include Hubz Grubz, Beau’s Treat and The Union General Coffee Company. To participate in this fun-filled day, admission is just $10 for all persons over 13, and ages 13 and under may visit for free. This admission gives visitors access to all of the events for the entire Tractor Fest. Individuals are welcome and encouraged to participate in the fun in other ways, too: the Tractor Fest is always open to volunteers, new vendors with items such as soaps, candles, jewellery and clothing and new members with tractors. Those interested are invited to find the required forms as well as the list of confirmed vendors on their website. Everyone is invited to what's sure to be a beautiful day of old-fashion country summer fun. for more information visit www.melbournetractorfest.ca9Summer 2025 Strathroy Area keepin’ it local®photo provided by Melbourne Tractor FestFree Universal Carriage rides around the grounds will be available from 9am to noon, and the popular Touch A Tractor event will also make a proud return on the day.www.strathroyarea.ca www.keepinitlocal.com
10Strathroy Area keepin’ it local® Summer 2025Restoring The Old '29 written by Alana Listerphoto provided by Strathroy Firefighters AssociationStrathroy’s Gem of Fire Safety Excellence A beautifully ruby-red, 1929 Ford Model A, known affectionately as Old ‘29, was the very first ever motorized truck to serve Strathroy’s citizens against the threat of fire. At present, though this vehicle may have faded into distant memory for many, or may even be completely unknown, the Strathroy Firefighters Association is now on a mission to bring Old ‘29 and the 96 years of small-town history and heroism it represents back into the spotlight. Centuries ago, in Strathroy’s early days, citizens had few options to protect them-selves from fires. Without an organized fire department, blazes were battled by any brave volunteers who happened to be on hand, splashing buckets of water over the flames. Although courageous, this meager method was not enough to completely suppress fires. Thus, in 1865, Strathroy’s first official Fire Department was created. As Strathroy’s population grew and its borders extended further in all directions, the Fire Department was not able to provide the kind of response needed to combat the number of fires in the area. In 1928, it was decided that a fire truck was needed to keep up with the growing threat, and thus, Old ‘29 was purchased from the Lorne Fire Engine Company, Ingersoll, for $950. Old ‘29 immediately made a significant difference in the effectiveness of Strathroy’s www.keepinitlocal.com www.strathroyarea.ca
11Summer 2025 Strathroy Area keepin’ it local®firefighting endeavours. It allowed firefighters to arrive on scene much faster and enabled them to bring along more equipment each time. However, after 35 years of service the truck eventually began to show its age, and when it was eclipsed by newer and flashier technologies in 1964, the town council sold the tired truck to a collector in Michigan for $400. As the years passed, its history faded into memory for most of the townsfolk, but a few Strathroy residents remembered it fondly. In 1980, after years of requests from Strathroy to bring Old ‘29 home, the Fire Department in Lennon, Michigan – where the truck was located at the time – finally agreed to sell the old fire truck. The residents of Strathroy quickly rallied together to bring it home. For this cause, the Strathroy Firefighters Association raised funds through multiple means. The money raised through these efforts was sufficient to be able to give Old ‘29 a triumphant homecoming celebration as it touched Strathroy soil once again in November 1980. In 1985 Old ‘29 was completely professionally restored to its former glory, and the beloved truck has remained a precious and irreplaceable staple of the community ever since. It has now been nearly 40 years since Strathroy’s original fire truck was last restored, and it is once again beginning to reveal the many signs of its age. Having been featured in innumerable parades, car shows and even several weddings over the years, the old truck is in desperate need of a full makeover to restore it to its original 1929 beauty. This year, the Strathroy Firefighters Association is determined to help make this happen. The Association has every confidence that Old ‘29 will be able to continue to stand as a beacon of hope and heritage to its 100th birthday and beyond. Its engine has recently returned from Indiana where it was overhauled, and the Association humbly asks the Strathroy and area community to partner with them in continuing to fully restore this cherished truck as soon as possible. In the present day, the Strathroy Firefighters Association operates with two main missions: to support the community through events and betterment initiatives and to restore and preserve historical firefighting artifacts. Having been in operation since the 1980s, they now meet every second Tuesday of the month, and although they still remain focused on community betterment, they have recently been focusing on brainstorming ways to finance the fire trucks much-needed restoration. 12Strathroy Area keepin’ it local® Summer 2025 clarification, the Strathroy Firefighters Association is separate from the Fire Department, but many of the volunteer firefighters for the Department also sit on the Association. Each year, in addition to their countless volunteer hours on duty, the firefighters also spend many hours off-duty planning and hosting community events and fundraisers. The Association is focused on promotional and restorative activity such as the current Old ‘29 project, hospital and retirement home visits, car shows, bingo events and free ice time and swims at local arenas and pools. They also host comedy nights, car washes and fundraisers such as the Hometown Festival barbecue. Additionally, they help with community service initiatives like donating to the food bank, assisting in the MS Boot Drive and supporting local charities and personal requests for help from the Association. Each request for donations is carefully and thoughtfully reviewed by the Association, and they debate and vote on these matters to provide as much help as they are able. This year, the majority of the Association’s fundraising will be in support of the Old ‘29 restoration initiative. The Association invites each and every community member to join them in their efforts to fundraise for the restoration of this beautiful antique, and they are excited to present several events and initiatives as means of supporting Old ‘29. One such event was the Yuk Yuk Comedy Night, which was held on April 5 of this year to tremendous success. Upcoming events include the Hometown Festival barbecue, which will be held on Friday, June 13, in downtown Strathroy, and later in the year, Turkey Bingo, which will take place on December 9 at 7pm. There will likely be other pop-up events sprinkled throughout continued from previous pagephoto provided by Strathroy Firefighters AssociationFor the Strathroy and area community, Old ‘29 represents almost a century of brave firefighting efforts, and celebrates the individuals over the many decades who have been, and continue to be, devoted to the service of their town. www.keepinitlocal.com www.strathroyarea.ca
13Summer 2025 Strathroy Area keepin’ it local®the year as well. The Association encourages all individuals to follow along via social media for further news and updates as the months pass. They also welcome any personal and corporate support to help make this restoration possible. This is the first time funds have been raised by the Association specifically in support of Old ‘29; surplus funds were used previously, but now specific initiatives are being tailored towards this purpose. At present, the Association’s fundraising goal is $25,000; however, the restoration will be proportionate to the amount of money raised. If the goal is surpassed, the Association will use the surplus funds to add period-specific accessories to the truck, such as nozzles, a hose, ladders and extinguishers. If the funds raised are below what is needed, fundraising efforts will continue for the foreseeable future, as restoration will not begin until the appropriate funds are raised to support the repairs needed on the antique truck. For the Strathroy and area community, Old ‘29 represents almost a century of brave firefighting efforts, and celebrates the individuals over the many decades who have been, and continue to be, devoted to the service of their town. By participating in the Association’s fundraising efforts this year, the Strathroy community will be able to help in not only honouring the history and sacrifices represented by the truck that past generations have made, but also ensure that the truck will continue to inspire hope and pride in the people of Strathroy and area for many generations to come. for more information find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/SFFA29/In the present day, the Strathroy Firefighters Association operates with two main missions: to support the community through events and betterment initiatives and to restore and preserve historical firefighting artifacts.photo provided by Strathroy Firefighters Associationwww.strathroyarea.ca www.keepinitlocal.com

18Strathroy Area keepin’ it local® Summer 2025 www.keepinitlocal.com www.strathroyarea.caFor a hundred years there has been a star burning brightly at the heart of this community, and for those hundred years the Strathroy chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star has been giving back to the community. Formed June 9, 1925, the local chapter has dedicated themselves to spreading the joys of Fidelity, Consistency, Loyalty, Faith, Love and Charity. During the course of those hundred years, the club has engaged in various charitable endeavors. Some of their most recent projects have included the building of new play equipment at Caradoc North Public School, the donation of two blanket warmers to the Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital in partnership with the Strathroy Middlesex Hospital Foundation and the Florence Nightingale Foundation, as well as a yearly bursary given to a graduate of the Strathroy District Collegiate Institute. They also support other local groups and organizations, such as VON, 37 Frank Street and the Strathroy Hospice. In the past, they have also given their support to the Strathmere Lodge, Women’s Rural Resource Centre, Adelaide-McDonald School Breakfast Program and various local Scouts Canada and Girl Guides of Canada groups. These contributions are made possible through the selfless fundraising of the members, with events such as euchre parties, charity dinners, brunches, pie making, bus trips and picnics in the park. They have also sold Rheo Thompson chocolates and fruit pies. It is with the com-munity's support that this group have been able to accomplish so much and it is because of that support that the Order of the Eastern Star will be able to continue to shine brightly within the community for another hundred years. 20Strathroy Area keepin’ it local® Summer 2025 www.keepinitlocal.com www.strathroyarea.caTucked away in a lush corner on the outskirts of town, the Mount Brydges Sonshine Daycare has been a hidden gem of not-for-profit excellence in childcare since first opening in 2009. For the past 15 years, the daycare has held a popular annual springtime Dinner and Silent Auction to fundraise and support its activities, but this year, they have decided to move in a new direction. On Saturday, June 21, the Mount Brydges Sonshine Daycare will open its doors to the public for its first-ever annual Fun Fair & BBQ. Mount Brydges Sonshine Daycare provides excellent childcare services and camps for 96 children from ages newborn to 12-years-old, with 26 dedicated perma-nent members of staff. These staff mem-bers include Early Childhood Educators, Early Childhood Assistants, Dietary and Custodial staff, which all play a unique role in providing excellent service to the daycare’s children and their families. In addition to the facility’s full-time staff, the daycare also proudly hosts apprentices and students from community colleges. These friendly on-site childcare staff are passionate about helping children and their families feel that the facility is an extension of their home, letting children take the lead in active learning, play and exploration. The little adventurer in each child is given special focus, with several hours of outdoor time each day in the spacious fenced play yards, plus occasional bonus features such as field trips and nature hikes. 23Summer 2025 Strathroy Area keepin’ it local®www.strathroyarea.ca www.keepinitlocal.com Meet some of Strathroy Area’s Youth EntrepreneursLocal youth entrepreneurs are driving innovation and creativity right here in our community. These young visionaries are not only pursuing their passions but also bringing inspiration to fellow students. When youth take initiative and turn ideas into action, it encourages their peers to follow their dreams, achieve their goals and get involved in meaningful ways. Successful student entrepreneurs can serve as role models, showing others that it's possible to make a real impact at a young age through dedication and creativity. Additionally, the journey of entrepreneurship helps students develop essential life skills such as communication, problem-solving and resilience. These qualities help contribute to personal growth as well as enable them to become valuable contributors in their community. These young visionaries are not only pursuing their passions but also bringing inspiration to fellow students.CozyCreations was founded in the spring of 2023 by Taylor Hurd and Vosco Brum, both 17-years-old. Inspired by social media content showcasing custom rug-making, they began researching the necessary tools and materials. When they discovered that a large frame would be necessary, they gathered lumber, screws, and other supplies to build the frame themselves. They also ordered tufting cloth and a tufting gun, and after a trip to a local craft store to pick up yarn, they had everything needed to create their first rug. The first rug was a video game character named Kirby. After some practice Taylor and Vosco learned new strategies and methods testing out different backings for the rugs and different techniques of tufting to find what worked best. They decided on a name and designed a logo and continued to make a social media page – making CozyCreations official. They soon posted their first few products for sale on their Instagram account. Through word of mouth from friends and family, sales started to roll in with people sending in requests for custom orders. Unfortunately, they hit an obstacle around Christmas time with some very unfortunate timing as their work space was crushed by a large tree that had fallen in a storm. The repair took a few months and put the business on hold. However, through hard work and perseverance, they are back in business and ready for your orders! 24Strathroy Area keepin’ it local® Summer 2025 www.keepinitlocal.com www.strathroyarea.caSawyer Hitchcock and Nathan Charron, both 17-year-olds from Strathroy-Caradoc, are the founders of Clearview Window Cleaning, a local business they've launched with a shared passion for entrepreneurship and a strong work ethic. The two friends saw a gap in the local market for window cleaning services and figured it was the perfect opportunity to build a business of their own to provide a much-needed service to homeowners and local businesses. More than just making money, they were driven by the desire to learn valuable skills, be their own boss, manage their own time, and create a business that reflected their hard work and ambition. With a focus on quality, efficiency and customer satisfaction, Sawyer and Nathan have quickly built a reputation for delivering crystal-clear windows with a personal touch. Their hands-on approach, combined with their attention to detail, has helped them gain trust in the community, where word-of-mouth and positive reviews have spread their name. Clearview Window Cleaning began as a side project to earn extra income but has since grown into a promising venture that keeps them busy throughout the year as they take pride in learning the ins and outs of running a business, from handling customer inquiries to managing scheduling and maintaining their equipment. Their youthful energy and commitment to the job have allowed them to stand out in a competitive industry. Additionally, they offer discounts for regular customers and referrals. 27Summer 2025 Strathroy Area keepin’ it local®www.strathroyarea.ca www.keepinitlocal.com of its founding members was already working for charitable organizations. What allowed the idea to really sprout was when meeting with some local Strathroy youths it was realized that there was a need for a place to enjoy food and community for all within Strathroy. Once the idea was formed it was time to get to work. The Strathroy Community Kitchen of Hope started by consulting with several local churches that ran lunch programs to find the information that they needed from people with experience running charitable work within Strathroy. The group also consulted other local organiza-tions such as the Strathroy-Caradoc Homelessness Action Committee, CMHA, Salvation Army and Middlesex Social Services. After receiving encouragement from these groups, a team was put together and plans were set into motion to start serving the community delicious meals. Currently all expenses are paid for out of pocket by the Strathroy Community Kitchen of Hope as they work towards being recognized for charitable status. Any donations of food to be served is greatly appreciated, from canned and dry goods like soups and pasta, to fresh fruits and vegetables. If your garden is bursting with homegrown veggies yielding more than you can consume, why not consider donating them. Additionally, they accept gift cards from grocery stores which would aid in purchasing other ingredients and supplies to help keep bellies filled. The Strathroy Community Kitchen of Hope is also looking for more volunteers to help with the meals and clean up afterwards. Whether you are a high school student looking to earn volunteer hours, someone who enjoys cooking a good meal for others, or simply have some free time and want to give back to the community, come on out – we have an opportunity for you. for more information email info.strathroyckoh@gmail.comThe goal of the Strathroy Community Kitchen of Hope is to create a judgment free zone where people can come and enjoy a free meal and to foster a sense of community, because community is at its strongest when we all share a meal together.
